A Journey Along Route 66: Experiencing the American Dream and History

On July 25, 2023, I completed my dream journey along Route 66. I drove my rental car for nine days, covering a distance of about 4,000 kilometers from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Route 66 is a historic east-west highway that was built in the early days of the American automobile era. It was once a symbol of the American Dream and attracted many people from all walks of life. However, it was decommissioned in 1985 due to the construction of interstate highways and the advancement of motorization.

I was able to experience the charm of Route 66 firsthand.

The history of Route 66

Route 66 was originally designated as a U.S. highway in 1926. It was designed to connect the eastern United States with the western United States, and it quickly became a popular route for travelers. In the 1950s and 1960s, Route 66 was a major artery of American culture and commerce. It was the setting for many popular movies and television shows, and it was a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.

However, the construction of interstate highways in the 1960s and 1970s led to the decline of Route 66. The interstate highways were faster and more efficient than Route 66, and they soon became the preferred route for travelers. In 1985, Route 66 was decommissioned as a U.S. highway.
